Look at any medical website and click on ADHD medication side effects. What comes up? A whole list of recommendations that your child must follow before even starting on these meds. They range from having a heart check up, blood pressure, stunted growth and sleep problems. We have not even started taking them yet! But these are all the side effects in a nutshell.
Then have a look at the FDA site to see what the ADHD medication side effects are according to the official version. I went there to-day although I felt wary about going there as I knew it would be a scary experience. It was!
First of all, there are approximately 1,500 entries for ADHD on their database. Then I checked Adderall which has 350 entries and looked specifically for the side effects. Basically, this amphetamine like medicine is still a Class II drug and strictly controlled due to risk of abuse.
In addition, any child who may have any history of heart problems, mania, bipolar or depression, tics, liver problems, thyroid problems should be extra careful about taking this medication.
As if that was not enough, the site warns that there may be a worsening of hostility and aggressive behavior if these are already present. I wonder what this medicine really does to a child. According to the blurb, it may help with some ADHD symptoms such as reducing hyperactivity and increasing attention span. But having seen all the above, I wonder if it is worth it.
It is much the same story with most of the other ADHD medication side effects caused by Ritalin, Vyvanse and Concerta. They all tell the same old story. Then there are all the side effects which can have a negative impact on appetite, sleep and moods. To cap it all, all these medications carry the black box warning which is the maximum there is.
Surely there is another type of alternative medication which can increase attention and reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity without having to go through all the side effects of ADHD medications mentioned above?
